Depression treated with transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)

People suffering from severe depression may benefit from receiving magnetic pulses to the brains. This can help with migraine headaches, stroke victims, and motor skills.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is an outpatient procedure that uses magnetpulses to stimulate the nerve cells of the brain. TMS therapy does not require hospitalization, surgery or anesthesia.

Adult patients who are not responding to antidepressant medications should be aware that the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has approved this treatment.

How does the TMS treatment work?

TMS therapy is the practice of placing a coil on the forehead while the patient lies down in a recliner. These currents are used to treat depression and brain stimulation.

Each session lasts approximately 40 minutes.

Studies have shown that patients respond better to 40 consecutive magnetic pulses for four seconds each. Based on the patient's response, the doctor will decide the frequency and length of each session.

Lower relapse rates for depression

Recent research has shown that severe depression sufferers who received TMS Depression Therapy were more likely to be treated than those who were prescribed medication or electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).

Studies show that between 10% and 12% of patients who experience improvement after TMS treatment relapse. This rate is similar to ECT patients.

The trials of TMS depression treatment were presented at this year's American Psychiatric Association annual conference. Participants who have had previous failed antidepressant therapy were also included in the studies.

Patients receiving booster therapy experienced significant improvements in their depression symptoms within two weeks. Nearly all patients reported some improvement in their depression following treatment.

Another study presented at the symposium showed that more than half of participants experienced a minimum of 50% improvement in their depression following TMS therapy. One small study also found that booster therapies could be helpful.
